A Story…
“It’s cold,” I say. The air is brittle. Dark clouds hang in the sky. She looks at me, sadness in her eyes. She says nothing. We walk down the street of a no-name town, there is a bench in the park. We sit down on it.
We are at the cafe. He is talking idly, but my attentions are elsewhere. My eyes wander from person to person, and eventually rest upon a couple in the corner. They are beautiful, white faced black and roses, her hand in his. He has a look of anger upon his face, and she has that of pain upon hers. I see their lips move, but I cannot hear what they are saying.
“You don’t love me anymore.” I say with a tone of sorrow. Again she looks at me, then replies. “Love is the emptiness in my heart. I cannot be sure that I love anything now. “I reach for her hand. She reluctantly takes it in hers. She holds it loosely, then lets it go.
Her hand drops to her side, she looks slowly up into his eyes. Again more words, then her eyes begin to glimmer. Tears form at the corners. The tears roll down her perfect white cheeks. I want to catch them upon my fingers, make them disappear. I cannot hold back her anguish. At the sight of her grief, he stops everything. He looks at her, then takes her in his arms. For a few moments, nothing in the world exists, except two lovers’ warm embrace. I feel emotion rising in me.
I take her in my arms, and the world disappears. Nothing else matters, except for that moment. Beneath the darkening sky upon an empty street, two lovers embrace. What seems to be hours, is only a matter of minutes. She pulls away, pain in her eyes. Words come from her mouth. I can’t hear them, but I understand them.
“Look,” I interrupt his idle speech, and point out the couple. Tears are beginning to well up in my eyes. “Some day, I will have that…”
“I am sorry, I cannot love you anymore,” and then my heart shatters…
“But not today.”
